Are you a budget traveler hoping to plan the best budget-friendly itinerary? Or would you prefer a classy, historic hotel with access to exclusive Paris shopping and gourmet restaurants?
Would you rather stay near iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower or the Arc de Triomphe? Or would you prefer a local experience, with the option to explore off-the-beaten-path streets and cafés?

I recommend making a list of your TOP three requirements for places to stay in Paris…then you can decide on the PERFECT arrondissement that fits your travel style and needs!

I’ve been trying to prioritize “slow travel” – spending more time in fewer places – so I look for places with a relaxing atmosphere!

Many people want to stay in a hotel near the Eiffel Tower. But what if I told you that there are BETTER hotels a short metro ride away? Read more to get some tips!
Here’s what I looked for in accommodations when deciding where to stay in Paris for my second visit to the city of light!
Access to the Paris Metro

I ALWAYS utilize public transportation (if available) when I travel to another city. When I traveled to Paris for the second time, I brought my family of five with me, so I knew I needed to find a hotel near a metro station. This is usually one of my TOP criterias for finding accommodation in a new city! Access to public transport is very important for creating an easy travel experience!

Family-friendly Accommodation

For my second trip to Paris, I traveled with my family of five. Considering the fact that it was my siblings’ first international trip, I wanted them to feel happy and comfortable about our accommodation. First impressions are important, especially in Paris!

I went back and forth between a budget-friendly hostel, or a highly-rated three- or four-star hotel. I decided to prioritize the family-friendly hotel that could accommodate my large family of five, knowing my family would be more comfortable in a hotel. As someone who is used to “rough-housing it”, a hostel is usually my go-to pick. But for my family trip to Paris, my accommodation needed to be family-friendly and comfortable!

I was so excited to bring my family with me to Paris! Here we are together in front of the Palace of Versailles!
Affordability

Affordability is USUALLY my most important criteria for choosing where to stay in a new city. However, given that I was bringing my family to Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics, I understood that the family trip I planned would not be cheap! There are many ways to make your family or solo trip affordable! Opt for hostels or affordable hotels in local neighborhoods rather than the luxury stays if you are planning a trip to Paris on a budget!

Making a list of your top requirements for deciding where to stay in Paris will help you narrow down locations and accommodation type that will best suit your travel needs!

Getting Around Paris: How to Navigate the Paris Metro

The Paris metro is the easiest and most affordable way to travel around Paris. Metro stations are marked by large red or green signs (depending on the neighborhood) and many lines connect and transfer to other lines, making Paris incredibly accessible! When deciding where to stay in Paris, I highly recommend finding accommodation near a metro station!

The metro is the easiest way to access ALL of Paris!

I highly recommend purchasing a Paris Visite pass – a metro card which provides unlimited use of any and every metro station, including trains – in the city of Paris. When I traveled with my family to Paris, I purchased the Paris Visite pass for each of us in order to have unlimited access to the Paris metro. We spent a lot of time traversing the city, from one side to the other, so having unlimited access to the Paris metro was the most affordable way to go!

1. Book Early!

The early bird gets the croissant! During spring and summer, hotels and activities in Paris book REALLY FAST. Do your research ahead of time and plan in advance, especially if you plan to travel during peak season!

2. Prioritize Your Travel Style and Location Preferences

When I traveled a lot as a budget-conscious student, I alway told myself that where I stayed didn’t matter. This worked for 22-year-old Bella who never spent much time at the hostels anyways! But now, I would prefer to find a comfortable accommodation in a great location. As I’ve matured, so has my travel style. Now I always prioritize clean and comfortable accommodation in the local, less-touristy part of a city rather than a bunk in a busy hostel. When deciding where to stay in Paris, consider your travel preferences and the location that suits your style!

3. Check for AC and Elevators

Air conditioning isn’t an issue during shoulder or off season. But there were many (MANY!) times where I found myself unable to sleep in an eight-bed hostel due to lack of air conditioning. When I search for hostels and hotels, I prioritize amenities like air conditioning and elevators for when I carry large bags and suitcases. Air conditioning is a luxury in American hotels, which is often not used in hotels across the world. Check you accommodations amenities before booking to make sure you have everything to make your vacation comfortable!

4. Skip the Hotel Breakfast

There are so many incredible boulangeries and cafes like La Maison d’Isabelle and Mokonuts to name a few. Why spend the morning sipping mediocre hotel coffee if you could indulge in a flaky pastry with a cappuccino in a local cafe? Skip hotel breakfast and hit the cobblestones running! Enjoy Parisian cafe culture!

5. Find a Hotel Near a Metro Station

The Paris metro is the most affordable way to access all of Paris (including locations outside the city like Disneyland Paris and the Palace of Versailles!). To easily access the city’s iconic landmarks without having to pay hefty fees for taxis or private transportation, opt for accommodation near a metro station. The options are endless as the Paris metro is highly accessible from all parts of the city. The metro is the best way to explore Paris without breaking the bank!

6. Read Recent Reviews

The best way to discover whether or not a hotel will be a good fit is to read the recent reviews. What are people saying about the cleanliness of the hotel? How are people describing the location? I always tend to look for any hints or suggestions about the beds…are the mattresses comfortable? Recent reviews for hostels and hotels are more telling than some less-updated blogs. This is a great way to determine where to stay in Paris!

7. Look for Boutique Hotels instead of Chains

I love boutique hotels for their charm and character. Oftentimes you can get more personalized service with a boutique hotel rather than a chain. Plus, you’ll feel more like a Parisian rather than a regular tourist!

8. Beware of “Eiffel Tower Views”

Oftentimes hotels boasting “Eiffel Tower views” might only give you a small sliver of the Eiffel Tower in the distance. You’ll pay a hefty price for a view you could get at a local cafe! Read the reviews or speak directly to the hotel to make sure you get what you pay for! Or choose an affordable hotel with access to the Paris metro so you can visit the Eiffel Tower up close!

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick Answers to Common Questions

Bella posing in front of the Eiffel Tower in summer 2024 when the monument had the Olympics rings on the front of it.

Is an “Eiffel Tower view” room worth the extra price?

In my opinion, an “Eiffel Tower view” is just a way for hotels to overcharge for a beautiful view you could otherwise get for free all around the city of Paris! There are so many incredible Eiffel Tower viewing locations all around the city! I recommend booking a hotel with access to a metro station so you can have easy access to the incredible monument.

What is the best arrondissement to stay in for first-time visitors?

My two favorite areas in Paris are the 3rd/4th arrondissements (Le Marais) – known for its classic Parisian charm and café culture – and the 11th arrondissement – foodie paradise with a local vibe.

How far in advance should I book accommodations in Paris?

I HIGHLY recommend booking at least three months in advance, especially if you plan to travel during peak season (May – August). Hostels and hotels in Paris tend to book very quickly!

Where can I find family-friendly places to stay in Paris?

For families traveling to Paris, I recommend either the 5th arrondissement – the Latin Quarter which features charming restaurants in a quieter part of town – or the 16th arrondissement – a more family-friendly location near Trocadéro and the Eiffel Tower.
