Gloomy February is right around the time when people start booking tropical escapes or sunny getaways.
But paradise hides in the shimmering, snow-covered mountains of Colorado, rewarding winter explorers with cozy, quiet mornings and frosty outdoor adventures.

Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains is Steamboat Springs, a romantic Colorado getaway that offers unforgettable outdoor activities and romantic moments of relaxation worlds away from the busy all-inclusives and chaotic resorts in warmer places.
In Steamboat Springs, “Champagne powder” blankets the pine-covered mountainsides and mesmerizing steam billows from the serene Strawberry Park Hot Springs pools.

Steamboat Springs is one of the most romantic ski towns in Colorado, the perfect winter getaway for couples hoping to enjoy the coziness of snow-dusted landscapes and quiet evenings by a fireplace.
I’ve visited Steamboat Springs TWICE over Valentine’s Day weekend with my honey (which also happened to fall over the three-day President’s Day holiday weekend!) and I’ve curated the perfect Steamboat Springs winter weekend itinerary for the romantics!
Best Time to Visit Steamboat Springs
The best time to visit Steamboat Springs, Colorado is during the month of February when regular snowfall conjures a snow globe-like mirage for the romantic Colorado mountain town.
On average, Steamboat Springs gets over ten inches of snow per week during the month of February (though 2026 was an unfortunate deviation) creating the perfect “champagne powder” conditions. February is a great time for skiers to visit because temperatures are generally colder, ranging from 5°F to 40°F, and the snow base is deepest.

Later winter months, like March and early April, see warmer temperatures, so you might experience slushy conditions in the afternoons and icy runs in the morning after freezing nights.
In early February, Steamboat Springs celebrates the Winter Carnival, a seasonal celebration of skiing and all-things-winter with Main Street events like Skijoring, street ski jumping, and group ski-racing.
This is a fun event for all ages and offers lots of activities besides downhill skiing for travelers who don’t want to pay for an expensive day ticket to Steamboat Ski Resort. The Winter Carnival is one of the busiest weeks for Steamboat Springs, so I prefer to travel to this romantic Colorado mountain town after the festivities.
President’s day weekend is my favorite time to enjoy a long winter weekend in Steamboat!
The past two years I’ve visited Steamboat during this long holiday weekend weekend, which also coincided perfectly with Valentine’s Day, and both times I’ve discovered incredible things to do in Steamboat, indulged in the most romantic restaurants in Steamboat, and skied like a pro at both Steamboat Ski Resort ($$$) and Howelsen Hill (FREE, read more to learn HOW!).

If you’re hoping to discover one of Colorado’s most romantic ski towns and plan a swoon-worthy winter getaway, mid-February is the perfect time to visit Steamboat Springs!
Where to Stay in Steamboat Springs for Couples
Steamboat Springs, one of the most romantic ski towns in Colorado, has a variety of options from semi-budget-friendly vacation rentals to peak winter luxury at the base of the Steamboat Ski Resort. After visiting Steamboat several times in winter, peak season for this incredible Colorado mountain getaway, I’ve found the best options for where to stay in Steamboat Springs.

I’ve sorted these options into budget, mid-range and luxury accommodations. However, you might find that even my “budget” options are a bit pricey…a result of the expensive peak-season prices for a winter getaway in Steamboat.
Here’s a breakdown of the sorting by price for these accommodations (winter rates):
Budget: $200-$350 per night
Mid-range: $351 – $500 per night
Luxury: $501 + per night
Here’s my list of where to stay in Steamboat for couples during the snowy, romantic winter months:
BEST BUDGET
Legacy Vacation Rentals (Hilltop)
Legacy Hilltop is the perfect budget-friendly getaway for couples. This hotel offers full service kitchens (just bring the salt and pepper!) and operates much like a vacation rental with hotel amenities.
Legacy Hilltop provides a free shuttle to and from Steamboat Ski Resort, Howelsen Hill, and Main Street. I’ve been staying at the Legacy Hilltop for the past several years and enjoy how I can make breakfast every morning before hitting the slopes or exploring the Steamboat’s winter activities.
Across the street from Steamboat’s Old Town Hot Springs is the Rabbit Ears Motel, a basic but comfortable pet-friendly motel that offers guests free breakfast every morning. The central location of Rabbit Ears Motel makes it perfect for couples who want to explore Main Street or have easy access to Steamboat’s main road. Rabbit Ears Motel does not have a shuttle to and from Steamboat Ski Resort, however parking is free!
Formerly the sister property to the Legacy Hilltop, The Fold is a recently-renovated collection of vacation rentals of all sizes, perfect for couples, families or groups. The Fold offers rooms with full-service kitchens, a free light breakfast during the snowy winter months, and a shuttle to and from Steamboat Ski Resort, Howelsen Hill and Main Street.
BEST MID-RANGE
In the heart of Steamboat Springs is a family-owned lodge offering comfortable, budget-friendly rooms. The Nordic Lodge is as central as it gets, making this accommodation the perfect place for couples who want to shop on Main Street and indulge in Steamboat’s best restaurants. Nordic Lodge doesn’t have a shuttle to and from Steamboat Ski Resort, however parking is free!
Steamboat has a collection of new hotels all just a short drive from the Steamboat Ski Resort. The Residence Inn by Marriott is one of these new builds that offers exactly what you’d expect from a Marriott: clean and comfortable rooms and standard hotel amenities. Most of these hotels offer free shuttles, making them a safe bet for couples who want standard accommodation.
BEST LUXURY
The Sheraton hotel lies at the base of Steamboat Ski Resort, nestled among ski rental shops and après ski bars. This four-star hotel is one of the best in Steamboat…and one of the most sought-after, so be sure to book at least three months in advance to secure a room on busy powder days! Sheraton has one of the most incredible spas I’ve ever visited, so if you’re planning on booking a romantic weekend in Steamboat, this is the perfect hotel for it!
During the snowy winter ski season, the Steamboat Grand is the perfect luxury hotel for couples planning a romantic weekend in Steamboat Springs. Just a short walk from Steamboat Square, which features an ice skating rink, après ski bars, rental shops and a collection of restaurants, this hotel is perfect for couples who want to stay in a location that won’t require much shuttling to and from the base of the mountain.
Romantic Activities in Steamboat Springs for Couples
Steamboat Sleigh Ride and Dinner
During the snowy winter months, Steamboat’s Haymaker golf course is transformed into an endless snow-covered landscape. Horse-drawn sleighs transport guests through the scenic Yampa Valley to an elegant multi-course dinner, giving “dashing through the snow” a whole new meaning (and taste!). The Haymaker sleigh ride dinner in Steamboat is the pinnacle of romantic Colorado luxury, a perfect addition to your romantic winter weekend itinerary!
Relaxing Soak at Strawberry Park Hot Springs

You don’t have to travel all the way to Iceland or Norway for a relaxing soak in a scenic hot spring. Just four hours from Denver is one of the most romantic hot springs in Colorado. Strawberry Park Hot Springs is a collection of romantic natural pools surrounded by boutique cabin accommodations with the same name.
Natural hot springs from the nearby landscape feed hot water to each of Strawberry Park Hot Springs’ many pools: you can soak in temperatures up to 106°F or cold plunge in the river, which can get as low as 32°F (sometimes frozen!).
This is one of the most romantic activities in Steamboat during the winter season. Whether you plan to visit during the day (all ages welcome!) or want to soak after sundown (adults only, clothing optional!), this is the perfect activity for a romantic winter weekend in Steamboat Springs!
Note: During the winter season, 4WD vehicles are REQUIRED to access Strawberry Park Hot Springs. Don’t have the right vehicle? Book a shuttle to Strawberry Park Hot Springs – the most convenient way to get there!
Couples Massage at the Rocky Mountain Day Spa
I’ve visited many beautiful spas around the world, but the Rocky Mountain Day Spa in the Sheraton hotel is one of the best.
Your romantic weekend in Steamboat Springs would not be complete without a relaxing couples massage! You’ll start your session by relaxing with tea or champagne in the relaxation room (get to the spa at least 15 minutes early to enjoy the amenities!), then enjoy a therapeutic massage of your choice in one of the many serene private rooms of the spa.
This activity is on the pricey side, but well worth every dollar spent. A couples spa weekend in Colorado is best spent at the base of Steamboat Ski Resort!
Romantic Dinner at Bésame

Valentine’s Day 2026 was a memorable one at Bésame restaurant in Steamboat Springs. A year prior my honey and I were indulging in the dry-aged meat cuts at Primrose, but this year we decided to indulge in the unforgettable Latin fusion cuisine at Bésame.
This romantic restaurant in Steamboat offers craft cocktails, tapas-style plates and shareable main courses. Book your reservation in advance for this Steamboat restaurant, it’s a popular pick for couples!
Snowshoe Hike to Fish Creek Falls
For outdoorsy couples who don’t mind a little snow on their boots, a snowshoe hike to Fish Creek Falls is a romantic outdoor activity in Steamboat that offers incredible Colorado views and uniquely Steamboat landscapes. This hike is just under five miles, so you’ll want to pack a picnic lunch. In the wintertime, fewer adventurers visit this scenic waterfall, making it a serene place to enjoy the Colorado scenery.
Tips for Driving to Steamboat Springs from Denver

If you’re planning on flying into Denver rather than directly into Steamboat’s airport here are a few tips for driving to Steamboat Springs from Denver:
4WD (or AWD) is BEST in Winter
The drive from Denver to Steamboat is approximately four hours, but can take much longer in snowy conditions. You’ll want a capable vehicle – something sturdy, with 4WD or AWD – that can handle snow or ice on the roads. You’ll traverse Rabbit Ears Pass, one of Colorado’s snowiest roads, so be prepared with the right vehicle!
Check for Road Closures BEFORE Driving to/from Steamboat
A blizzard on the way home from Steamboat turned my four hour drive into a seven hour drive due to road closures I didn’t account for before leaving Steamboat. If weather rolls in, check road conditions BEFORE departing to/from Steamboat.
Stop in Silverthorne for a Restroom Break
I’ve been driving up to the mountains in Colorado my whole life, and every time I need to stop for a restroom break on the way, I always stop at the Dunkin’ Donuts in Silverthorne. Adjacent to a gas station, this is one of the best places to stop and stretch or use the restroom before the long drive to Steamboat.
The Itinerary: A Romantic Winter Getaway to Steamboat Springs
How to Spend Three Perfect Days
Arrival
Welcome to Denver!
It’s time to pick up your rental car and make the ~4 hour drive from Denver to Steamboat (unless you’re flying directly into Yampa Valley Regional Airport). Confirm with your rental car company that your vehicle is capable of driving in the snow: 4WD or AWD is preferable and snow tires always help.
Make sure to check the weather BEFORE driving up to Steamboat – snowy road conditions might increase traffic and you’ll want to make sure mountain passes (Rabbit Ears Pass, Berthoud Pass for alternate route) are open before driving up to the Rocky Mountains. The primary route to Steamboat Springs is to drive up I70 West to US-40W, you’ll pass a one-road town called Kremmling, the last stop before Steamboat Springs.
This is one of my favorite drives in Colorado. On the way to Steamboat Springs, you’ll pass by several of Colorado’s epic ski resorts including Loveland and Copper Mountain, your first introduction to the Colorado slopes!
When you pass through Kremmling, the last small town before Steamboat Springs, you’ll experience beautiful, remote Colorado landscapes. Usually during the month of February, these landscapes are dusted with snow, an unforgettable sight, especially for travelers visiting from warmer regions.
I like to look for the large, yellow F.M Light and Sons signs scattered along the road to Steamboat. This family-owned Western store on Steamboat’s Main Street has a collection of customizable cowboy hats, boots, and lots of Steamboat souvenirs. The signs are hard to miss…there are 31 of them, I counted!
When you arrive in Steamboat Springs, check into your accommodation for the weekend and head to Hypnotic Chicken for dinner. I LOVE this fried chicken restaurant in Steamboat. Day 1 begins the official Steamboat winter itinerary!

Day 1: Steamboat Spa Day
Enjoy a Relaxing Massage at Rocky Mountain Day Spa and Soak in Colorado’s Most Romantic Hot Springs
If you booked a vacation rental with a full-service kitchen like Legacy Hilltop or The Fold (my top choices for budget-friendly vacation rentals in Steamboat!), enjoy a home-cooked breakfast before a romantic day in Steamboat Springs.
Your romantic Colorado getaway can be as affordable as you make it! For the past several years I’ve booked accommodations with full-service kitchens so I can cook breakfast (and sometimes lunch!) to save some money. Traveling to Colorado during ski season can get very expensive!
If you’re staying in a hotel without a kitchen or want to enjoy a Steamboat breakfast spot, my favorite place is Colorado Bagel.

After breakfast, head to the base of Steamboat ski area. Explore the shops and scout an aprés ski bar before heading to the Rocky Mountain Day Spa in the Sheraton Hotel. A couples massage is one of the most romantic activities in Steamboat Springs, and the Rocky Mountain Day Spa in the Sheraton does it right.
Arrive 15-30 minutes early to enjoy tea and champagne in the relaxation room, then soothe your tension with a variety of choices for massage type. Swedish, deep tissue, therapeutic? The options are endless! I booked the basic couples massage and my only complaint was that I should’ve booked a longer session! After your massage, you’ll have the option to enjoy an infrared sauna for an additional price.
For lunch, I really enjoyed the Back Door Burger. This local-favorite serves up classic burgers in a hole-in-the-wall setting with dollar bills stapled to every space on the wall. It’s truly an awe-inspiring sight nearly as jaw-dropping as the shimmering “champagne powder” at the Steamboat Ski Resort.
Strawberry Park Hot Springs is the perfect place to spend the afternoon. I spent Valentine’s Day in Steamboat at this relaxing natural hot springs oasis alternating between cold plunging in the river and boiling in the Park’s hottest pool.

During the winter season, the road to Colorado’s most romantic hot springs is only accessible by 4WD vehicles or the resort’s shuttle buses. I recommend booking the shuttle to Strawberry Park Hot Springs, along with your ticket to the pools. Even though I have an AWD vehicle, I booked the shuttle for convenience (it can oftentimes pick you up from your hotel!).
If you’d rather soak after dark, Strawberry Park Hot Springs transforms into an adults-only oasis, the ultimate romantic escape in Steamboat. Clothing is optional after dark!

End the first day of your Steamboat winter itinerary at the most romantic restaurant in Steamboat Springs, Bésame. Serving up Latin fusion including delectable tapas dishes like patatas bravas and perfectly-fried plantains, and shareable entrees, Bésame has become one of my favorite restaurants in Steamboat. This is one of the most popular restaurants in Steamboat for couples, so make sure to book your reservation in advance!
Day 2: Steamboat Slopes Day
Ski for FREE at Howelsen Hill (Sundays) or Hit the Slopes at Steamboat Ski Resort (Ikon Pass or Day Pass)
Day two in Steamboat Springs is all about hitting the slopes!

I’ve skied at Steamboat Ski Resort and Howelsen Hill nearby and I have lots of information to share about these epic Colorado ski resorts.
Start your morning with a hearty breakfast either in your vacation rental, at the hotel breakfast bar, or at Colorado bagel. Then decide if you want to ski all terrain levels at Steamboat Ski Resort, or enjoy the beginner terrain at the smaller, less-visited Howelsen Hill.
Steamboat Springs has two ski areas: Steamboat Ski Resort and Howelsen Hill. Steamboat Ski Resort consists of five peaks and over 3,700 acres of skiable terrain. This Colorado ski resort has a collection of beginner-friendly green runs (14%), steepers blue runs (42%) and difficult, expert-level terrain (44%). Known for its “champagne powder”, the best snow of the west, Steamboat Ski Resort welcomes winter enthusiasts from all over the world.

Day passes to Steamboat Ski Resort range in price from $250 – $400 during peak winter months, and dropping as low as $150 during the late spring season.
Having lived in Colorado my whole life, I’ve skied at many of Colorado’s ski resorts. Loveland, Copper, Breckenridge…you name it, I’ve probably skied it! Unfortunately, until a few winters ago, Steamboat Springs was a place I hadn’t yet visited…and I regret not visiting Steamboat sooner!
Winter 2026 has been a disappointing season for snowfall. But that didn’t stop me from planning another weekend trip to Steamboat this year!
With the devastatingly low snowfall in Colorado, I decided I didn’t want to shell out several hundreds for a day pass to Steamboat Ski Resort. I looked into cheaper alternatives and came across Steamboat’s smaller, more low-key neighbor, Howelsen Hill.

Howelsen Hill is MUCH smaller than Steamboat Ski Resort, with approximately 50 skiable acres compared to Steamboat’s 3,700. This small, beginner-friendly ski area has 19 runs and additional Nordic trails. But only certain runs are open depending on the snow coverage.
Searching for cheaper alternatives to the $250+ lift ticket at Steamboat Ski Resort, I discovered that Howelsen Hill offers FREE skiing on Sundays for EVERYONE! Hence, why I included this on day two of my Steamboat weekend itinerary, which happened to fall on a Sunday. You can rearrange this itinerary if you want to ski for free at Howelsen Hill depending on when you arrive.

Howelsen Hill is not nearly as large as Steamboat Ski Resort, but it’s a great place for beginner skiers to start or advanced skiers to fit some free skiing into their Steamboat itinerary. I’ll take a few hours of free skiing over no skiing!
After your day on the slopes, I have two recommendations for dinner:
- Enjoy at romantic sleigh ride & dinner at Haymaker
- Reserve a table at Tahk Omakase
Day 3: Steamboat Choose-Your-Own-Adventure
Snowshoe in Steamboat, Try Nordic Skiing, or Explore other Winter Adventure Activities!
The final day of your romantic Steamboat itinerary is a choose-your-own-adventure day! I like to leave some flexibility in my itineraries to allow my readers to build their own schedule based on their travel style. Here are some options for how to spend day three in Steamboat:
Option 1: Another day on the slopes!
Whether you choose to ski at Howelsen Hill or Steamboat Ski Resort, an additional day of skiing is a day well spent!

Option 2: Winter Horseback Ride at Saddleback Ranch
Not many people consider horseback riding in the wintertime, but a snowy ride through the powdered trails at Saddleback Ranch was one of my favorite activities in Steamboat. This guided trail ride is perfect for all skill levels. Riding happens rain, snow or shine so wear your warmest gear (I wore my ski suit during my ride)!

Option 3: Tubing at Howelsen Hill
What’s more romantic than racing your partner down a snowy hill on a tube? Besides skiing, Howelsen Hill also offers tubing for $35 per adult. This is a great alternative to downhill skiing!

Option 4: Get a Custom Cowboy Hat at the Steamboat Hatter
In the heart of Steamboat Springs is a one-of-a-kind shop where cowboy hats are custom-made (and sadly, a bit outside my budget at the moment). The Steamboat Hatter is the place to go to craft your own cowboy hat. This bougie activity is a fun way to tailor your own souvenir from Steamboat Springs, Colorado!
That concludes your romantic weekend in Steamboat! If you’re driving back to Denver, check the road conditions before making the trip!
Pro Tip: Stop at BeauJo’s for Colorado-style pizza on the way back to Denver (I LOVE this place!).
