When I think about the long list of incredible places for solo female travelers to visit, there’s one iconic American city that always sits at the top of that list.

Spring is the best time to visit NYC (in my humble opinion) for THIS 🌸 reason!

New York City is one of the BEST places in the world for solo female travelers. Visiting the “big apple” solo should be at the top of every female traveler’s bucket list.

With a variety of incredible things to do by yourself, lots of local eats enjoyable at a table for one, and amazing public transport (usually FILLED with people, so you don’t truly feel alone, even in transport), NYC is the perfect destination for solo female travelers.

This detailed NYC spring itinerary for solo female travelers follows the EPIC itinerary I planned when I visited New York City solo. I’ll cover all the bases for travelers visiting for the first time – the itinerary even includes some time spent gawking at the Empire State Building in Midtown Manhattan – and share some of New York City’s hidden gems off the guidebooks, for the travelers who have already visited before.

Tulips blooming in the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens (peak season is mid-April to early May).

Spring in New York City is perfect for solo female travelers for two reasons: vibrant blooms (tulips and cherry blossoms!) decorate every garden in NYC, painting the concrete jungle a rainbow array of colors, and accommodation prices tend to be slightly more affordable than peak summer travel, ideal for solo female travelers.

NYC Spring Itinerary for Solo Female Travelers

How to Spend an Incredible 3 days in NYC as a Solo Female Traveler

Day 1

West Village Food Tour, Make Your Own Perfume, NYC Museums and Pizza

Morning

Day 1 of this NYC solo female traveler itinerary will be spent exploring SOHO and the West Village (by eating your way around these neighborhoods!) and discovering quintessential New York museums (I have a couple favorites to recommend!).

Start your morning at a local cafe or a matcha spot. Some of my favorites include Cha Cha Matcha, 12 Matcha, and Buddy Buddy coffee shop, all in NOHO near the famous Bowery street.

A flaky croissant and a vibrant green matcha on a wooden table with a napkin labeled with a green "12" from 12 Matcha in NYC.
PRO TIP for visiting 12 Matcha (one of NYC’s most popular matcha cafes!): visit EARLY on a weekday to avoid waiting in line!

One of my favorite things to weave into my itineraries is a guided food tour. Food tours in NYC are the perfect activity for solo female travelers because they allow you to explore the city with a guide AND try new foods you otherwise might have missed. A guided tour can make the solo aspect of your trip less daunting when you add it to the beginning of your itinerary.

I booked the guided Viral Food Tour (West Village) on Viator and LOVED every aspect of this tour. The food tour was a long crawl through New York City’s MOST viral spots including Apollo Bagels, L’Industrie Pizza, and L’Appartement 4F (and MORE!). Booking a guided food tour like the Viral Food Tour rather than visiting all these places on your own is the best way to indulge in NYC’s best eats without waiting in one of the city’s infamous lines.

Did Apollo Bagels live up to the hype? Absolutely!

The Viral Food Tour in NYC would be incomplete without L’Industrie Pizza!

Flaky, delectable Bureka from Buba Bureka.

I also LOVE the social aspect of guided tours. Oftentimes I’ll meet other solo female travelers on these guided tours and have a friend to explore the city with!

Here’s the EXACT tour I booked to try NYC’s most VIRAL foods without waiting in line!

Afternoon

Following the guided food tour around SOHO and the West Village, I recommend reserving a spot to design your own perfume at Olfactory.

Bella holing a white gift bag from Olfactory, perfume experience in NYC
Made this PERFECT perfume for my mom for Mother’s Day!

This is the perfect, curated experience for the solo travel girlies who like to bring home little momentos from their trips. Perfume is always a good souvenir, and curating your own and using it on your trip can associate the good vibes of your solo trip to NYC with the fragrant smell of your self-designed perfume.

The perfume making experience is very popular among solo female travelers or girl groups who want to plan a unique activity in NYC, so make sure to reserve your spot in advance!

After your 45-60 minute session at Olfactory, catch the subway to upper Manhattan to visit one of New York City’s iconic museums.

I’ve visited several of the city’s museums including the world famous Met Museum and the Frick Collection. My recommendation for your solo trip to NYC is to visit the Frick Collection. This museum is smaller than the Met Museum, and much more “digestible” for a small girl in a big city.

Frick Museum Garden Court.
My favorite museum in NYC, the Frick Museum (shown here is the Garden Court, one of the only places you can take photos!).

The Frick Museum features a stunning collection of art from the 14th century to the 19th century, including several Renaissance pieces. This museum is decorated ornately all along the walls of the monumentally gilded former mansion of Henry Frick, a very wealthy industrialist and art collector. Walking through this museum felt like I was transported to some of the most incredible museums in Italy. The architecture alone of the mansion-turned-museum makes this place worth adding to your NYC spring itinerary.

Evening

By evening, you’ve likely worked up an appetite after stuffing yourself on viral foods during the morning food tour.

I would be lying if I said that I didn’t eat TONS of NY-style pizza. But there is one specific place that I always visit in New York…I’ve visited NYC three times now and every time I go I always stop at Carnegie Pizza for classic NY-style pizza.

Three times I’ve visited NYC, and EVERY time I visit I go to Carnegie Pizza!

Located steps away from the bustling Times Square, a necessary addition to the itinerary if you’re visiting for the first time, Carnegie Pizza is a local pizza place that always makes it on the itinerary.

After indulging in ooey, gooey NYC-style pizza, catch the subway back to lower Manhattan to enjoy the city skyline from the incredible CloudM rooftop bar. I stayed at the CitizenM hotel for part of my solo trip to NYC and on my last night, I discovered this EPIC rooftop (I was pinching myself for not discovering it sooner!).

The incredible view of Manhattan at CloudM rooftop bar.
CloudM is the BEST rooftop bar in Manhattan!

CloudM is the perfect place to enjoy the dazzling lights of the skyline after your busy first day of your NYC spring itinerary.

Day 2

Brooklyn Blooms, Vintage Shopping, and Getting Crafty

Morning

There’s a reason why this NYC spring itinerary is curated specifically for the solo travel girlies! This itinerary includes a lot of time in NYC’s beautiful gardens, discovering the vibrant blooms that paint the city a colorful array of shades.

If you plan your solo trip to New York between mid- to late-April, you’ll experience some of New York’s most incredible blooms: the cherry blossoms and the tulips decorate the streets and leave colorful petals everywhere. Additionally, during spring in NYC, Macy’s hosts an incredible flower festival the last week in April through early May, curating colorful fragrant displays of flowers all over the store on 6th avenue.

My goal for my solo trip to NYC in spring was to discover the blooming tulips, but I was fortunate enough to catch the end of the cherry blossom bloom which usually experiences peak bloom a week or so prior to the NYC tulips.

On day two of your NYC spring itinerary, you’ll head out of Manhattan to Brooklyn to discover the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and shop around the local vintage stores.

Grab a classic New York bagel from Russ and Daughters or Leon’s Bagels before catching the subway to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens.

An egg and cheese bagel with cream cheese in a green/white checked paper from Leon's Bagel.
This popular bagel spot (Leon’s Bagels) was STEPS away from my hotel and so delicious!

Depending on the season, you’ll be able to experience peak bloom for cherry blossoms AND tulips in NYC. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is the PERFECT place to see both.

The cherry esplanade is the place to see cherry blossoms at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. I recommend bringing a picnic basket and a good book to enjoy while you soak up the warming spring sunshine.

I visited NYC the last weekend in April and the Cherry Blossoms were still so beautiful!

To see tulips at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden stroll by the Fragrance Garden and Shakespeare’s Garden for the best blooms.

Vibrant pink and yellow tulips surrounded by other varieties at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
Tulips are my favorite flower…so seeing them EVERYWHERE in NYC was amazing (shown here is the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens)!

After enjoying the beautiful spring scenery at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, walk (~40 minutes) or catch the subway (~15-20 minutes) to Dekalb Market Hall. This food hall in Brooklyn is arguably the BEST place to eat, especially if you want to try a NYC classic, Katz’s Deli, without waiting in the Manhattan lines.

A classic Reuben and matzo ball soup from Katz's Deli.

I ordered their famous Reuben with matzo ball soup and it was DELICIOUS.

Afternoon

There’s no better place for vintage shopping than in Brooklyn.

After enjoying lunch at the Dekalb Market Hall, walk about 20 minutes to the Brooklyn Flea market underneath the Brooklyn bridge (open 10am – 5pm Saturdays and Sundays during spring and summer).

Beneath the bridge is a curated vintage market called the Brooklyn Flea!

The first thing I thought about when I visited this curated vintage market was how incredible the location was. Many people RAVE about the views of the Brooklyn Bridge from DUMBO, but this scenic market location was just as incredible. I loved sifting through old leather jackets, discovering handmade souvenirs, and testing out the digital cameras. Vintage shopping in Brooklyn is the best activity for solo female travelers in New York.

Once you’ve had your fill at the Brooklyn Flea market, take bus B57 or metro line F to line L to reach Urban Jungle and L Train Vintage (I found out WAY TO LATE as to WHY they call it L Train Vintage…). This curated vintage store is the ultimate thrift paradise. I bought a denim jacket and a pair of Levi’s jeans for under $25 (TOTAL).

Evening

I could have spent all day vintage shopping in Brooklyn but I did have a few more plans for day two of my NYC spring itinerary.

There are so many unique activities for solo female travelers in NYC. A few of my favorites include jewelry making at Pearl and the Beast or seeing a Broadway show. There are also quite a few cute cocktail bars in SOHO like Odd Sister and Sweet Linda! For dinner Mama’s Too is another popular pizza place in the West Village worth adding to your NYC solo traveler itinerary!

Day 3

Central Park, NYC Observatory Views, and Hand-pulled Noodles in Chinatown

Morning

Day three of this NYC solo female travel itinerary is all about experiencing the concrete jungle’s greenery, dappled with vibrant colors of spring blooms.

In a city as densely populated and covered in architectural wonders as New York City, there’s limited space for greenery to provide a welcome respite from the bustle of the city. I planned a self-guided tulip crawl to discover NYC’s best gardens and parks, which showcase incredible blooms during the spring season.

Start your morning in Midtown Manhattan to indulge in NYC’s best matcha and hojicha at Mika’s Direction. My amazing guide on the Viral Food Tour I booked on day one of this New York spring itinerary recommended this hidden gem in NYC and I must praise her for the recommendation. Mika’s Direction in Koreatown will have you gulping down the best matcha in NYC while gawking at the monumental Empire State Building.

From Midtown, catch the subway to upper Manhattan to start your tulip crawl.

The Central Park Conservatory Garden is one of the BEST hidden gems in NYC. Located far north off 105th street, only native New Yorkers with a love for tulips visit this space. In late April, vibrant tulip varieties decorate the garden, painting the city’s best green space a vibrant rainbow of colors. I could have spent hours sitting on the garden benches with my book.

I picked the perfect spring day to wear my red dress!

The next stop on the self-guided tulip crawl of New York is Park Avenue.

Park Avenue has some of New York’s most beautiful tulips. I really enjoyed walking down the street looking for a variety of colors. The tulips north of 90th street tend to bloom earlier in the season because the metro line below the ground warms the soil, creating an early bloom opportunity for north Manhattan tulips.

If you plan to visit New York in late April, you’ll have the best luck finding tulips in peak bloom walking downtown from 90th street.

Pink and white tulips on Park Avenue.
Beautiful tulips on Park Avenue! PRO TIP: to see the best tulip blooms, walk down Park Avenue from 90th street!

After you’ve had your fill of tulips on Park Avenue, walk down to 79th street and head back to Central Park.

I wasn’t lying when I said that day three of this solo female traveler NYC itinerary would have lots of time spent in the city’s vibrant spring gardens! This self-guided tulip crawl around NYC was my favorite way to spend a spring day.

The next stop is Shakespeare’s Garden, a small but blooming garden with tulips and other flowers. On the way, if you’re walking along 79th street, you’ll pass by Central Park’s charming castle, the Belvedere Castle, which offers beautiful views of the park.

The last stop on the self-guided tulip tour will take you through the charming streets of the Upper West Side to the West Side Community Garden. During the last two weeks of April, this local garden (free to the public) hosts its annual tulip festival. Trust me, you don’t want to miss it.

Afternoon

There are lots of options for lunch spots in the Upper West Side, or you can head downtown to SOHO and the West Village for boutique dining options.

Late afternoon is the perfect time to visit one of NYC’s observatories. There are a lot of options to choose from and here’s a list of my top favorites (from most favorite to least favorite):

Bella, selfie at the top of One World Observatory with the NYC skyline.
All of Manhattan is visible from One World Trade Center Observatory…the tallest in NYC!

Summit One Vanderbilt: An incredible immersive experience offering sweeping views of the NYC skyline, Summit One Vanderbilt is my FAVORITE NYC observatory.

One World Trade Center Observatory: Manhattan’s tallest observatory experience, towering over the city at floor 102! The observatory at One World Trade Center has incredible views of all of Manhattan, New Jersey, and Brooklyn.

Edge: NYC’s highest outdoor observation deck with incredible views of the Empire State Building.

Top of the Rock: Located on the 67 floors above the Rockefeller Center, Top of the Rock is the place to go for the best close-up views of the Empire State Building. For an additional price you can upgrade and recreate the famous “Lunch on a skyscraper” photo.

Empire State Building Observatory: The only observatory where you CAN’T see the Empire State Building, because you’re IN IT…but still worth adding to your itinerary for the incredible views of the skyline.

Evening

There’s no better place for a solo traveler in NYC than 1915 Lanzhou Hand-pulled Noodles (Mott Street location). This restaurant is very popular in Chinatown and visiting as a solo traveler gives you an opportunity to take a seat at the bar, which offers a front-row seat of the hand-pulled noodle making process. I dream about this restaurant EVERYDAY.

I hope you enjoyed this curated NYC spring itinerary for solo travelers!

BEST BUDGET

Now Now NOHO

There’s no better solo female traveler hotel in NYC than Now Now Hotel!

Now Now offer open-concept, capsule style rooms where guests have a private bed on a floor of small rooms. The open-concept makes this hotel the ultimate introvert paradise because talking in your capsule is prohibited to not disrupt other guests.

Solo female travelers in NYC will love this hotel because it offers private rooms on a women’s only floor. Bathrooms and shower stalls are shared among guests and common spaces are the perfect place to meet other solo travelers, much like the social aspect of a hostel! This hotel is also incredibly budget-friendly, compared to many options surrounding it.

BEST MID-RANGE

CitizenM Bowery

CitizenM Bowery is one of the best upscale-yet-affordable hotels in New York. Offering incredible views of Manhattan on the high floors and a stunning rooftop bar (CloudM) that rivals the observation decks, I highly recommend CitizenM for solo travelers looking for a bougie lower Manhattan stay for a good price.

BEST LUXURY

Bowery Hotel

The Bowery Hotel is one of the best luxury hotels in NYC. Embodying quintessential New York style and architecture, these rooms are elegant and lavish, perfect for solo travelers with a high budget.

When to Visit NYC in Spring for Vibrant Blooms

NYC Cherry Blossoms

Peak cherry blossom season in New York city usually occurs in mid-April. Peak bloom is highly dependent on the seasonal weather, however, you can expect to see cherry blossoms in mid-April. Some varieties bloom later than others, so plan your visit around the locations that most interest you!

NYC Tulips

Peak tulip season in NYC occurs from mid-April to early May. Some tulips, like the tulips north of 90th street on Park Avenue, bloom earlier due to unique growing conditions. These tulips see peak bloom one to two weeks prior to other tulips due to the metro line beneath warming the soil.

There are so many incredible places to see tulips like the Central Park Conservatory Garden, Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, and the West Side Community Garden.

Weather in NYC in Spring

Spring weather in NYC is usually characterized by mild temperatures and frequent rain showers.

I visited New York City the last weekend in April and I experienced one day of rain (bearable with an umbrella) and two beautiful days of sunshine. There are so many rainy day activities in NYC, so don’t let bad weather stop you from visiting!

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick Answers to Common Questions

NYC is incredibly safe for solo female travelers. I’ve visited several times now, and I haven’t felt unsafe traveling to the big apple!

In busy areas like Times Square or crowded metro stations, you’ll want to keep an eye on your personal belongings. Additionally, avoid walking alone late at night. These recommendations hold true for many cities around the world.

The best place to stay in NYC for solo female travelers is the Now Now Hotel in NOHO. This capsule-hostel-hotel hybrid provides private beds in an open-concept floor plan which makes a solo traveler feel never truly alone.

Budget-friendly and in the PERFECT location – right near my favorite street, Mulberry Street, which has a collection of incredible shops and restaurants – Now Now hotel is the best place to stay in NYC for solo female travelers.

Spring in NYC can be quite chilly, especially when it rains. The most important things I recommend you bring for spring in New York are your best walking shoes, an umbrella, a digital camera (to photograph tulips and cherry blossoms), and a BIG appetite (for all the amazing NYC eats!).

In general, NYC is quite expensive. However there are ways for solo female travelers to make this big trip more affordable. Stay at a budget-friendly solo traveler hotel like Now Now, rather than paying for a premium room in a different hotel. Find “cheap” eats like NY-style pizza or a hearty NY-style bagel. Budget ahead for shopping in the city so you can shop when you want! New York is expensive, but it can be affordable if you make it so!
